General information
The Amsterdam Ports, including the ports of Beverwijk, IJmuiden and Zaandam, form one of the foremost important economic regions in Europe and one of Europe’s top ten transport centres. It is a broadly diversified industrial, trade, transport, financial and tourist centre, seventh out of 300 in importance within the EU. The region’s versatility and flexibility is explained by the high rate of foreign investments in the area as well as by expanding transhipment activities. In total 740.400 people are employed in the Greater Amsterdam area. The four ports together form a multi-purpose port area where all types of commodities and ships are handled with the exception of very large crude carriers. Many modern terminals for dry and liquid bulk, containers, roll-on roll-off cargo and general cargo, distribution companies and port related industries are active in the Amsterdam region. Dry or liquid, bulk, in containers or separately packed: goods are in the best of hands with the Amsterdam transport and shipping people. During the last ten years the throughput of seagoing cargo has risen to 84 million tonnes.
