General information
Maassluis is located between Hook of Holland and Rotterdam on The New Waterway, 9 miles from Rotterdam. Maassluis is often referred to as the first town on the New Waterway emphasizing its favourable position as transit port for the Westland, famed horticural centre of Holland.
Loading and unloading ships in the port fall under the legal restrictions described in the Law ‘Nuisance Act’ (Hinderwet). These restrictions are in force because, among other reasons, of housing near the quay.
Authorities, the mayor and city council of Maassluis, must be requested in writing, in advance, for permission to carry out activities that fall into this category. The request will then be considered and permission granted or not.
During bad weather it is possible to remain in port or to allow the crew to disembark.
Close to the entrance of the harbour is the head office of Royal Dirkzwager with a modern information centre monitoring ship movements on the New Waterway.
Waternet
Maassluis has a pontoon at its disposal in accordance with the ‘Waternet’ project. The meaning of Waternet is to transport tourists via the river to several cities and let them get to know the special characteristics. At the moment people are working regional to put together tourist packages. Maassluis is anxiously awaiting and hopes that in the near future the city will also be visited via water, which it has such a close relationship with.
