Ocean-Going Vessels Are Relatively Observant of Environmental Legislation

According to the Dutch Inspectorate for Transport and Public Works, ocean-going vessels observe environmental legislation relatively well. Last year, they investigated whether ocean-going ships complied with European legislation. Most violations concerned the handing in of waste materials at ports.

Most violations concerned the handing in of waste materials. Ocean-going vessels are compelled to hand in their waste materials at ports to reduce dumping at sea. 111 of 1364 inspected foreign ships, approximately eight per cent, had too many waste materials onboard. This was also the case for three per cent of the inspected Dutch ships, where four out of 159 did not comply with regulations.

The Inspectorate was pleased with the ships’ observance of regulation concerning the use of cfk, sulpher levels in fuel and the ban on organic tin compounds in coatings.
