General information

The port of Vlaardingen, located on the North bank of the Nieuwe Maas, is the seventh port in the Netherlands. Traditionally it was a fishing port with mostly fishing connected industries. After the Nieuwe Waterweg was opened in 1872 the short access to sea stimulated the growth of the port.

Port Accommodation

Harbours and landing stages

Vulcaanhaven
The Vulcaanhaven (private), the largest harbour with a water surface of 165,000 square metres is accessible for vessels to 65,000 tons deadweight with a draft of up 39 feet.
The dry bulk cargo terminal of Rotterdam Bulk Terminal (RBT) is located in the eastern part of the harbour. RBT handles bulk cargo here in cooperation with Vulcaanhaven BV and other stevedoring companies. Vessels carrying bulk cargoes such as ores, phosphates coal, ferro alloys, pig iron and kaoline. The cargo is discharged directly into river barges for transit or ashore for storage. Equipment includes 2 transporter bridges which can handle up to 16 tons, and a conveyor belt system with a maximum handling-rate of 25,000 tons a day.
The Norfolkline (part of A.P. Möller Maersk Group) is located in the Western part of the harbour, where a new terminal was built in 2006. The ferry terminal can accomodate Ro-Ro vessels with a length of up to 200 metres, the quays (with three ramps) are 550 metres long. Norfolkline provides a new daily ferry service between Vlaardingen and the Humber Sea Terminal in Killingholme (UK). The service runs a daily departure from each direction, from Monday to Saturday. There is also a service to Felixstowe (UK) in each direction every day.
Geographically the location - close to the highways A4, A20 and A15 - will allow customers an advantage both in distance as well as in driving time. With the current diesel rates and the pressure driving hours, Vlaardingen is an extremely attractive option for ferry transportation to and from the UK.

VOPAK Tank Terminal
The VOPAK Tank Terminal (private) has 3 riverside berths for sea-going tankers drawing up to 40 feet and several berths for barges and coasters. Terminal facilities include 365 storage tanks with a total capacity of 435,000 m3 for the storage of edible oils, fats, molasses etc.

Koningin Wilhelminahaven
The Koningin Wilhelminahaven (municipal) is used for loading or unloading smaller sea-going vessels and inland craft. The Eastern part of the harbour is used for sea-going vessels with a draft up to 23 feet and a length up to about 120 meters.
The cargo is directly discharged from or into river barges. The transhipment will be done by floating cranes up to 16 tons for dry bulk cargo and by mobile cranes up to 80 tons at shore for general cargoes. Sea-going vessels discharging or charging oil into or out inland barges is also possible. Dangerous cargoes are not allowed.
The Western part of the harbour is used only by inland barges for waiting or transhipping between two barges.

Lensveld Wharf
The Lensveld Wharf (private) for general cargo is situated between the entrance of the Koningin Wilhelminahaven and the Buitenhaven.

Buitenhaven

The Buitenhaven (Old harbour, municipal), originally the fishing harbour, is now in use for river craft and tugs. West of this harbour are the privately owned landing stages of Lever Sunlight, Verwo, Mostert Absorbents and Van Gansewinkel.

Hydro Agrihaven
The Zevenmans Haven is the privately owned harbour of the Hydro Agri Fertilizer plant. The harbour is suitable for vessels up to 2,500 dead weight tons and a maximum draft of 18 feet. The jetty for vessels unloading acids in bulk is on the riverside. Maximum draft 25 feet.
