Infrastructure
The entire port area is organised as a dock harbour, cut off from the North Sea tide by locks. The lock complex, consisting of three locks for sea going vessels and one for pleasure craft, ensures a safe entry to the port area for ships up to 45-foot draught. Outside the locks up to 56-foot draught is accepted. Sailing time from the locks to the Amsterdam port through the 300 metre wide 20 kilometre long North Sea Canal is less than two hours, depending on the terminal the vessel is bound to moor.
The port area is connected to its European hinterland by highways, railroads and inland waterways. The Amsterdam Rhine Canal is a direct connection with Germany, Switzerland and, even further the Balkan countries, capable of handling all types of inland shipping.
The presence of the international airport, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, 10 kilometres south of the Amsterdam port, is of the utmost importance. Schiphol handles some 44 million passengers and 2 million tonnes of airfreight annually. Schiphol serves as a true European airport as many passengers from neighbouring countries prefer to travel via Amsterdam Airport.
